Romans 9-Synopsis

Romans 9—Israel’s Unbelief, It is not as Though the Word of God has Failed

 

Introduction: Romans 1:18-21 is clear on the responsibility of mankind

                          Romans 3:9-20, 23—the doctrine of Total Depravity

                           Acts 9—The author of Romans and his testimony

                          1 Timothy 2:4—God loves everybody and desires all to be saved

 

Structure of Romans 9:1-5—It is personal for Paul and Israel’s unbelief is a tragedy

                          V.4-5 Does being a Jew have privileges and accountability?

                           v.6-13 Israel’s unbelief is consistent with God’s Word

                               Proof—the promises of blessing were made only to the children of the Promise, so Isaac not Ishmael and Jacob not Esau

 

Question: Who is the real Israel? “It is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham” (Galatians 3:6-7). Is the real Israel Elijah or King Ahab—its Elijah. Were the real believers the Pharisees or Jesus’ disciples (John 8:32-47)? Bottom Line—Israel’s rejection of Jesus did not prove Jesus was not the Messiah, but actually proved that unbelieving Israel was not of God.

v. 14-29 God’s divine plan is not unfair. It is impossible for God to be unfair, but it is impossible for man to be fair—we don’t know what fair is. 

 

Proof—Exodus 33:19, If people are to be forgiven it rests solely on God’s mercy because no one deserves it.

Exodus 9:12-16, God uses people’s stubborn unbelief to reveal His attributes of both mercy and justice. God is just in condemning those who deserve it, and God is merciful in saving believers.

 

Question: Does lowly created man have the right to deny God’s sovereignty over His own creation?     

C. S. Lewis—“God in the Dock”

Jeremiah 18—“Like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in God’s hand”

BOTTOM LINE—God has chosen to give some people exactly what they deserve, but to others He gives mercy

 

Rom.9:25-29, two quotations from Hosea and Isaiah show that the prophets predicted Israel’s unbelief and the Gentiles belief; but also that the “remnant” of Israel would be saved. (see also Romans 11:25-26)
