Competition
Competition seems to be the essence of the American dream. No matter what theatre of operations you live in you find yourself competing for something. I remember the movie PATTON with George C. Scott who won an Oscar for it. In the opening speech he said, “Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser”
When asked if he was competitive, Leo Durocher said, “If I were playing 3rd base and my mother was rounding third with the run that would beat us, I’d trip her. I’d pick her up, brush her off and say, “Sorry mom but nobody beats me”
When asked about how he blends his Christian beliefs into coaching, Mike Ditka said, “Strong spiritual beliefs are essential to get through life. But that don’t mean we’re not going to try to kick the other guys butt”.
The great statesman Henry Clay said, “Of all human powers operating on the affairs of mankind, none is greater than that of competition”

As the jockey Willie Shoemacher used to whisper to his horse—
“Roses are red, violets are blue
Horses that lose are made into glue”
