Themes of the Bread of Life Discourse  John 6:26-69

  1. v35, “I am the Bread of Life, he who comes to Me shall not hunger” see also v.32-33, 41, 48-51         The crowd was confused by this metaphor but it worked perfectly because: 1. The bread miracle in Jn. 6:1-13, 2. Bread is the key staple of life, 3.They asked for the bread that Moses gave, but 4. Jesus offered spiritual bread for eternal life, 5. The true bread of life is the sacrifice of His life as an atonement for sin, verses 51-58

  1. Jesus came down from heaven, 6:33, 38,50, 51, 58

  1. The Necessity of belief in Jesus in v.29, 35, 36, 40, 47, 64, 69

  1. Eternal Life—seek the kind of spiritual food that doesn’t perish but results in eternal life—v.40, 47, 51, 54, 58, 68

  1. The mystery of conversion as The Holy Spirit draws people to Christ—v.37, 39,44,45, 65

  1. The progression of Unbelief—interested in v.34, grumbling in v.41, arguing in v.52, too troubling to accept in v. 60, withdraw in v.66

Question: Besides literal bread, what do people hunger for?   Knowledge, Truth, Significance, Meaning, Purpose, fulfillment?

Matt. 16:24-26, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, take up His cross, and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake shall find it. For what will a man be profited if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?”
